ParticipantI have to admit; I’m still chuffed that IT sales engineers make more money than the developers that actually create the product.
I suppose this is made up by the fact they are usually fired first in a downturn.

The difference is profit center vs. cost center.which do you think is more valuableto a business? It should be obvious. A developer can make a great product that cant be sold and the compay is toast. A sales guy can sell a mediocre product that shouldnt be sold and the company is Microsoft.
