Hot Water Heater Replacement

I found out that in some cities in San Diego county, you need a permit to replace a hot water heater in your home. Why is this necessary and does someone actually come out to see what brand you put in and if it’s acceptable? My apartment has a Rheem 40 gallon hot water heater from 1993 and it’s already frustrating enough trying to find reviews and information on current models, nevermind a honest, competent and fairly priced plumber. I have a feeling there is a big markup in these units just like there is for water softeners.

I paid $900 otd to have mine replaced, with the heater being $400.

Frankly, you don’t have too much selection. Most of the boilers these days are only made by a few manufacturers, so picking one versus the other isn’t that much useful. For example GE boilers sold at places like home depot are rebranded Rheem’s. They do this to make it more frustrating for buyers to compare, just like matresses.

I think you just need a licensed plumber to get it replaced. Don’t even bother to try to save the cost of the tank itself. the arm/leg portion is in the install.

Try the Bradford White efficient series. Think we put that in our last place, reliable,etc. As FLU stated, costs for WH is 900, so another 100 or so for better model is so worth it.

It seems that the Bradford White’s are the prefered choices for plumbers with Rheem’s being second best. Paid 400 for a BW and a plumber installed it for 250 plus 50 for haulaway. Unfortunately you won’t find the BW’s in stores, the plumber picked it up from a plumbing supply shop.
