It is just disasterous, honestly, to be in an HOA. Besides their Nazi regime mentality. I would pay the fees for the necessary things that the money goes to b/c they would have to be paid if it were a SFR, insurance, water, landscaping, etc. The problem is that it’s a community and everyone needs to pay into it and once people stop paying into it, basically collapses. And this is on a good day, b/c very often HOAs are not managed properly and are frequently underfunded. That means that others are carrying the burden. Just very ugly. I really have had moments where I think maybe I could handle living somewhere w/an HOA (though I really doubt I could deal w/their petty rules) but then I read something like this and just cringe and shudder at the thought.
I have lived with these and yes they can be a royal pain. Don’t have one now. But, not all HOAs are in distress. I know of a couple of buildings that the HOAs are in great shape. These are probably the exception, however. And of course even in those places you will still have the rules and board meetings, difficult personalities, etc…
