ParticipantA pool is a liability in many ways. The maintenance cost is high (water, heat, etc) and after about a decade the pool needs an update.
Old houses are actually worth more without than with a pool. Pools are often eye sores that need to be filled in.
But I do think that kids enjoy having a pool and have good memories of frolicking in the family pool.

ParticipantHappened to us when we were house hunting in 1993. Except, it was the homeowner who ran out of cash while on a poorly thought out remodel and walked away from the home (to add to the tragedy, I think his family fell apart too). We were offered a good discount for the “unfinished pool”. We said no thanks. With a small child, we did not want a house with a hole in the ground at any price!

ParticipantSpeaking of holes. Why don’t homes in SD have wine cellars or bomb shelters or any kind of basement?

ParticipantBy the way, you can not just fill in a pool when you tire of it.
A friend, whose kids were grown, got tired of maintaining a pool no one used anymore found out that there are regulations for getting rid of a pool; she had to have everything removed and then fill in the hole. It was so expensive that she opted to keep the damn pool.October 8, 2007 at 6:18 PM #87466Peace

Participantan friend of a friend is affected by this… sounds like they might be totally screwed out of about $20k. they really thought they were going with a solid, reputable company too. the article says that the state contractors license board is investigating hallmark for criminal &/or civic violations. any idea what that could mean?
