Tom Blackmore grew up in a well-off family, and tried to provide a similar lifestyle for his own young family. As an adult, Blackmore was a married father of two who worked in commercial real estate at Lee & Associates in Carlsbad (and apparently at NAI San Diego before that).
Blackmore had some huge early career successes in the bubble years including a $24 million Carlsbad lease for Invitrogen, and it goes without saying that he would have had a difficult time maintaining that success in the post-Greenspan-bubble era (I have told you about the CRE market, haven’t I?). So it’s not a great leap to suggest that financial pressures led to his breakdown. And then he planned an attack on his parents that looks suspiciously like he was trying to kill them and inherit their wealth:
