“I think consumer spending is hanging in there. I can’t explain why.”

August 23, 2007 at 2:09 PM #80077LostCatParticipantI went to Costco last night and stood in line for about 10-mins before I could check out because it was so crowded. Then i went to a Saturn Dealer and didn’t see a soul. Then I went to Denny’s and everyone was eating, then I went to an open house and no one was around. when driving through the parking lot near a wal-mart, I saw a lot of crap in a lot of different shopping carts and everything in the carts said “made in China”, I say a short sale sign..
What could this mean?

August 23, 2007 at 2:16 PM #80090Allan from FallbrookParticipantTelling the American consumer to stop spending is like telling a junkie to quit doing heroin.
We have been conditioned to spend, and a little recession (or depression) ain’t gonna stop us.
People will literally have to see the money (or credit) spigot shut off before they will stop spending.

Simple, because the vast majority of consumers have jobs. Until that changes, they’ll keep on spending. Perhaps the housing recession will lead to an economic recession and people will begin to lose their jobs. Until then, I highly doubt people will stop spending.
