To me a car is “FREEDOM” (and convenience),
I really could not imagine my life without owning one.
Yes a Backup is backup.
Have you ever been without electricity for 2 or 3 weeks?
I have.Actually I could image it (it was a PITA),
I lived in Shanghai (inner circle) for several months, it was novel for a week or so but it quickly became a PITA without a car.I would add that car makers need to sell “BASIC” cars and trucks again.
They are pushing luxury way too much.
December 12, 2018 at 1:43 PM #811285FlyerInHiGuestI never experienced being without eclectricity. In a modern society that should not happen unless you live out in the boonies.
Yeah I agree about basic cars. But there’s a lot more profit in luxury features.
In the cities, cars should be lighter and electric autonomous limited speed only. Ban human driven cars. For example in Manhattan, DC or central London.

It was in L.A. 1994 January.

What about the county-wide blackout in 2011. It was a 12 hour outage and it was somewhat like chaos here in SD.
December 13, 2018 at 1:01 PM #811290MyriadParticipant
If the car lasts 15 years, fuel savings would be about 25% of the cost of the vehicle. We’re on our fourth EV (Model S/Model 3)
Total investment to do this for solar would be about $22K.
Depending on energy consumption patterns, payback is about 5 years.
Hmm, so you spend (aka save) $4400/year on gas/electric & gasoline?
I’ve looked at solar and maybe my consumption is low – I’ve never been able to get the payoff under 10 years. But then my house is fairly cool in the summer – almost never turn on the A/C.Certainly for operating costs, the EV is much less than gas. But the acquisition costs are much higher for a comparable vehicle and the used market is still somewhat limited.
My current commute car is a 13 year old Camry, paid off, and only have liability insurance (~$300/year). Maybe when the new EVs come out in a few years.May 3, 2019 at 1:53 PM #812449FlyerInHiGuestTesla’s gigafactory in Reno. Tesla and Apple caused a housing boom and shortage in Reno. Housing prices are though the roof.
The new economy is not going back to the industrial rustbelt. Too bad for them.May 7, 2019 at 7:26 AM #812452moneymakerParticipantRead today that basic insurance for Tesla model 3 is $2000/yr. yikes. That is double what I pay for my current 5 vehicles.
May 7, 2019 at 12:52 PM #812456FlyerInHiGuestI pay about $1500 extra per year for insurance on a 2016 BMW i3.
If you see a handsome urbanite in an electric car, that’s me.California insurance rates are actually cheap compared to Nevada, Texas and Florida. I know that in Nevada it’s double.
May 7, 2019 at 3:40 PM #812457The-ShovelerParticipantCurrently EV’s are just a novelty for well to do people who don’t need to drive much.
Not ready for prime time yet.
But they are improving and coming down in price.
Need to get charge times down below 5 minutes IMO.
I cannot wait 30-60 minutes every hundred or 150 miles.
(or 6 hours at home).
I would need to buy a used one too, I don’t think my wife would let me spend >30K on a small sedan.May 8, 2019 at 3:33 PM #812461Oni KoroshiParticipant
Currently EV’s are just a novelty for well to do people who don’t need to drive much.

Going to Vegas I only need to take one 15 minute charge break. With the new v3 superchargers coming out it should be much less time.
It’s nice waking up to a full “tank” and never having to worry about stopping at a gas station before or after work.
May 9, 2019 at 6:50 AM #812464The-ShovelerParticipantI am guessing you have one of the higher end >200 Mile range EV’s.
If it works for you fine.
Me I would always be worried about scheduling in charging time, would probably need a cheap ICE-car back-up.
Also I think I would feel the same way I do about timing-belt cars, after 6 years I would start worrying about how much longer the batteries will last.
May 9, 2019 at 10:03 AM #812465BoomerAangParticipantI’ve got a model 3 and insurance is about $800 a year through ameriprise-costco. The same as my 2013 touareg tdi. That average insurance should be brought down by tesla insurance coming out the pipeline.
May 13, 2019 at 2:06 PM #812487FlyerInHiGuestI went to a friend’s new Lennar house. It has solar and 50amp electric outlet in garage. They just need to buy an electric car.
June 7, 2019 at 5:32 PM #812722FlyerInHiGuestCalifornia has a new law to make it easier for condo owners to have charging power at their parking spots. Once again, we lead the way. But I have yet to see individual charging stations/outlets at open condo parking spaces.
