I think we can all agree that it has always been a little sketchy, especially if you don’t know Spanish or have no experience there.[/quote]Something tells me that these kidnappers would not be impressed by an American speaking Spanish.

That family had a horrible experience and were lucky to get out alive, I feel for them. However, they were not being smart about their travels: (1) A new truck pulling a big “weekend warrior” trailer is like waving a sign saying “I have lots of money” (2) Driving at night is a big no-no.
In addition, the police know of this scam and it has been well published. If you are signalled to pull over on the road by an apparent police car at night with sirens and lights, the real police recommend you to find a well lit area with lots of people before you pull over (even if it is many miles).

ParticipantWe own a house in Estado de Mexico and go frequently. Our Spanish is 100%. Baja is a small part of the republic. However, we don’t have our heads in the sand either. There are places to avoid right now, such as Juarez. Currently the public safety situation is deteriorating as Felipe Calderon presses his war on the drug cartels. BTW, someone said only Mexicans can own land. This is only true in the restricted zone and was placed into the xenophobic 1917 constitution.
