So what about that 14th am provision about the validity of debt not being questioned. What does that mean? Are the republicans trying to push Obama to unilaterally raise the debt limit?

No, they’re pushing for that trillion dollar coin.
The debt limit is clearly anti constitutional, not only because of the 14th but because it’s in contradiction with appropriations by Congress.
Arguably, by appropriating more than the debt ceiling, Congress has already raised it. The debt ceiling should be done away with.
The is very interesting. We have had shutdowns before, but we never had a government default.
