With “socialist” healthcare systems, the goal is health; in a “capitalist” system, the goal is higher profits — even if those profits come at the expense of people’s health.[/quote]Saying “Capitalist” healthcare is only concerned about profits is similar to an anti “socialist” mentality of saying socialist models are only concerned about death beds and providing care to people who can contribute to the system through working. It is a blanket statement. I work for a large health care provider and never once have we sat around at executive meetings discussing ways to ream it to the patient through upselling and unnecessary care. If word got out patients would go one of the many other competitive providers.
I know you guys hate the capitalist system but we do actually care about our patients despite what you may think.

ParticipantGood point DJ. In a prior life I was in charge of strategic planning for a large health system in PA about the size of Scripps. I attended and presented at numerous executive board meetings and the only thing we ever focused on was delivering the highest quality care possible.

GuestThe problem with health care in America is that the industry can charge whatever it wants, after the fact.
If you give an architect a blank check, he can build you the nicest house. But can you afford it?
Everyone wants to stay at the Ritz Carlton, but the average person can only afford Holiday Inn.
We need to find a way for the consumer to share the burden of care and see the cost of care ahead of time; so the consumer can benefit from shopping for health care like he shops for electronics.
For day to day stuff, medicine is not that hard. Just pick up some books and read.
We need to educate people so that they know what is healthy and what isn’t.
