Haven’t been there, but apparently, allowing people to go there unrestricted would require Congressional action, which hasn’t happened yet. But yeah, you can catch a flight via Mexico or Guatamala, and the Cubans will supposedly be nice enough not to stamp your passport if you’re American.
December 17, 2014 at 8:04 PM #781157FlyerInHiGuestIt’s pretty awesome. Great for us and great for Cubans.
Normalization of relations with Cuba will be part of Obama’s legacy.
Clinton normalized relations with Vietnam in 1994 and visited Vietnam before leaving the White House. Vietnam has since been on an economic boom.
I expect Obama to similarly make a trip to Cuba.
Apparently, the Pope and the billionaire Fanjul brothers (friends of the Bushes) pushed for normalization.
December 17, 2014 at 8:23 PM #781158spdrunParticipantI never understood why it’s illegal for Americans to visit Cuba, but it’s fine for them to go to North Korea on a US passport (if the Norks will have them, of course).
December 17, 2014 at 8:35 PM #781159FlyerInHiGuestI don’t think it’s constitutional for the government to restrict our travels per se. The ban is on trade with Cuba. You can book a tour through Canada and pay the tour company, so you don’t have to spend money in Cuba. There are exceptions for educational, medical and humanitarian visits.
December 17, 2014 at 8:55 PM #781160spdrunParticipantDoesn’t work legally — they’re paying the Cubans, so you’re considered to be indirectly still spending your money in Cuba.
If you want to go, probably better to cut out the middlemen and just buy a ticket to Cuba through a third country, being careful not to take back any evidence when you re-enter the US.
December 18, 2014 at 6:18 AM #781164The-ShovelerParticipantWell I just added smoking a Cuban cigar to my bucket list.
December 18, 2014 at 6:36 AM #781165Del Sur 14ParticipantI went there while on Semester at Sea. Very interesting place to visit, would recommend it highly.

They suck. Its just the privilege of smoking one… BTW… I have cubans… Bought them in Canada…
Nicarguan leaf is generally considered better. They snuck the bush out of Cuba and found that the plant does better in the climate of Nicaruaga and so the leaf is more desirable from there.
But ya… we should normalize relations with Qu-ba…

December 18, 2014 at 9:56 AM #781172scaredyclassicParticipantmy mom and her childhood pal had a trip to cuba scheduled through an educational group. pal got sick. something bad with her foot; might have needed amputation. pal ignored doctors orders and went anyway. turned out foot didnt need to be amputated. about a year later pal died.
true story
the bucket list involves an actual death at the end …
December 18, 2014 at 10:31 AM #781173moneymakerParticipantMorgan Freeman’s character was accused of being selfish for going out and doing the bucket list when his wife thought he should spend his last days with his family, food for thought, is it selfish to do what you want to do in your last days?

This made me laugh. It’s probably true, but is that a bad thing? 🙂
