If your credit is shot due to errors and inaccuracies, through no fault of your own, then you should easily be able to resolve the issue yourself.
Review the FCRA laws and file disputes with all the major credit bureaus. Document everything. Follow up to make sure the errors are removed, if not, consult an attorney who will force the creditor to correct the files and you may be entitled to damages.
If the credit problems are your fault, then you won’t be able to do much about it, other than filing disputes hoping the creditor won’t respond, or using some “unorthodox” tactics. If you are still considering a credit repair service for such, make sure that your fee is dependent on results and not paid up front.

April 16, 2008 at 5:05 PM #188661La Jolla RenterParticipantcv_renter, go with Lexington! You will be pleasantly surprised how fast the process works. Yes you can do it yourself, but I’m with you, not worth the time.
When trying to decide if you really paid a credit card late 3 years ago. Save yourself the headache of research and just report it as inaccurate. If they don’t dispute it, it comes off. Give yourself the benefit of the doubt for once.

April 16, 2008 at 5:14 PM #188664dharmagirlParticipantYou’d be surprised by how many of the creditors DO dispute things…
I literally opened a Linens ‘n Things account FOUR years ago after buying a new townhouse.
I was traveling heavily for work, hadnt yet set it up in my bill pay, and paid it ONE day late. It is still listed as a “30 day late” on my credit report, and they refuse to delete it.
I will never shop there again because of this. It’s hard to say how many thousands of $$$ they have lost, as well as my good will as a (former) regular customer. I will shop anywhere but LNT.
Anyway, my point is that disputing is not that easy. But, good luck!
