This may sound simplistic, but always go with an upgraded pad. The better the pad, the better the carpet will feel and the longer it will wear.

I went with bonded carpet for my carpet. However, I had them price match floorsonly.com for the materials. Their labor was around $0.55/sq-ft for flat surfaces. If you can get home depot to install it for $139 and be able to get them to price match floorsonly.com, that would be your best deal ever. I haven’t seen ANY place that can beat floorsonly.com.
