In 2017-2019, I solicited bids to have $75K-100K worth of landscaping done.

It is amazing that I was willing to spend that amount of money and some landscape design companies would refuse to come out because it wasn’t in their wheelhouse for one reason or another. We live in a very wealthy part of the country where companies can turn down contracts of that size.

Some did come out and then never got back to us.

In the end, I received 3 bids out of the 10 or so companies I contacted.

I look at it this way – they weeded themselves out for me. If I couldn’t even get a bid out of them, why would I want them to work for me?

The contractor I eventually picked did a fabulous job and was very easy to work with. Very happy with the result.

Some guys prefer to take the smaller jobs and bang them out en masse. Lower level of quality expectation.

how can a landscaping job be out of the wheelhouse of a landscaping co.?

i understand bidding high if you dont really want the job or esp. if u dislike the client. some call it “the asshole tax”. but to come out, spend 2 hours, promise to get a bid over and ghost me? seems odd…not just 1 or 2 times. many times…

My advice is to not take it personally. In my opinion, this just means the contractors who you contacted are working.

Based on my limited personal experience with contractors: When they are working they simply don’t return calls. At all.

When they are ready for another job, they will return your call. And probably expect to start working within a few days.

It’s not the way I would run a business. But to be fair, it’s not the kind of business I would run either.

BTW, when I hear “pencilneck” I can’t help but think of the movie Ghostbusters.

I hate doing major home improvements when the economy is good. Hard to find good contractors available, price is higher.

Same thing happened to us. When the economy is good contractors can be extremely picky.

Case in point we hired someone to do a clean up and patch work after a water leak back in 2014, they were very receptive, came right away and we gave them a raving review on yelp. Fast forward 2018, we asked the same company to do a bigger job, to which they replied, the job is too small or we were slightly out of their service area I forget. We responded that the job they did earlier for us was smaller. Realizing that we were a return customer from their early days, they told us they felt bad but that they’ve just gotten too busy.

In terms of no soap, just this year Elizabeth Warren has credited her fountain of youth to never washing her face. I’d always thought she was in her 50’s turns out she’s in her 70’s.

That and we don’t wash cats and dogs every day with soap it would totally ruin their skin/coat. It is a curious strategy. For now, we will stick to non sudsing soaps.
