Make sure that the guy is properly licensed and doesn’t have prior disciplinary action.
https://www2.cslb.ca.gov/OnlineServices/CheckLicenseII/CheckLicense.aspxIf he screws something up, a licensed guy is going to have a bond and insurance that might cover the damage.
In addition, a contractor without a license is deemed to be your employee as a matter of law, not an independent contractor. See Labor Code 2750.5. So if an unlicensed contractor (or one of his workers) gets hurt on the job, YOU (or your homeowners insurance) will have to pick up the tab.
But on the flip side, you can technically stiff unlicensed contractors on your entire bill, even if they’ve already done all the work and installed materials. B&PC 7031.

June 29, 2011 at 12:21 PM #706610jpinpbParticipantThanks for that link. Very good to know. I hadn’t even thought of checking.
Looks like Gary is in good standing. I know in watching how he works that he makes sure he does stuff right.
Looks like Jason’s Tailor Made Cabinetry is active and in good standing.
Looks like A & L was suspended (issue w/workers comp insurance) and then active. I still think Ceasar is a good guy w/some good employees.
Edit: And looks like Royce Gilmore – Custom Reflections Hardwood Floors is also active and in good standing.

If any of you are interested in some unique light fixtures, try Vintage Barn Lights or Barn Light Electric.
