Isn’t it true though that the most passionate discussions on this board involve politics (or Jeff Bridges)?
In scaredy style: Passion is good.
My thoughts on the value of passion as it applies to this housing-related blog can be found at the bottom of every page on this site, which sets the tone of this space.
Politics suck.
Passion is good.
Data is better.… as it applies to this housing blog, that is.
Again – if you want passionate political discussions, go somewhere else.

Got any data to back that up?
Political discussions often come with data.
For example:
Number of socialist countries in Europe: 0

Usually I can make any group of people laugh. I’m less funny one on one.

Read the book in the ’80s when I was an ROTC cadet.
A few months ago I was on an airplane sitting next to an army infantry captain. We chatted a bit. He’d been to Afghanistan, and had seen some light combat.
He had no knowledge of even the basic history of US involvement in Vietnam.
I generally have a lot of hope for the next generation, but this was a discouraging moment.
Am I talking about politics?

I have good friend who’s a former Navy Officer, and he’s now an airline pilot. He actually worked in Korea doing joint defense with the South Koreans in case of an attack by the North. His knowledge of the Vietnam War and history ing general is almost nil.
One of my young cousins fought in Iraq and Afghanistan. Not much knowledge of history and geography.
With that said, I think that we are screwed in Afghanistan. 2014 is coming up soon. Karzai’s term is ending so he won’t get anything through parliament.
Sad to say, but Iraq and Afghanistan will join Vietnam as huge American failures.
April 19, 2012 at 12:48 PM #741922AecetiaParticipantI think we are screwed in Afghanistan, too. The history there of the invaders leaving in ruin for decades even in modern history is solemn testament to the outcome. It is another quagmire for us. And a complete waste of blood and treasure.

No data needed.April 19, 2012 at 1:37 PM #741929sdduuuudeParticipantI seriously think brian, markmax and Allen from Fallbrook should start their own 3-headed political blog. Would be awesome! Think of the passionate and stunningly cohesive arguments they could have.
April 19, 2012 at 2:07 PM #741930briansd1GuestI love Mark and Allan. I don’t agree, but I respect their points of view.
The useless political posts are Rush Limbaugh type rants about government.

Yeah I heard… What a nutjob! Nugent however represents his side pretty well.
I know a guy who’s an Obama hater. He’s owns a little phone store in a strip mall and has no health insurance. Shares a house with his sister. Kinda difficult to respect people like that.

The Vietnam War was scrubbed out of the Regular Army’s DNA, thus most line officers younger than Colonels have virtually no idea of the war or the tactics used.
Interestingly, its the exact opposite in the SOF and SpecWar community where Vietnam is studied in exhaustive detail, along with the British in Malaya in 1950 and the French in Algeria and Indochina (1950s and 1960s).
I remember attending a Command & Leadership course where Tet 1968 was closely studied under the rubric of “Risk Management Failure” and nary a mention of Vietnam. All of the vital details had also been eliminated, resulting in a sterile presentation, where the “names had been changed to protect the innocent” as the instructor snidely commented.
Sadly, Iraq and Afghanistan will probably follow Vietnam in terms of being colossal fuckups. And, yes, pri, I fully acknowledge that these largely happened under Dubya’s watch.
