I see his point on this one… When I lived in Philly I literally took two “long weekend” trips to London. 6 hour red eye – paid less than $300 for the ticket – spent 3 days/night there – flew back on the 4th day. I’d keep an eye on airfare sales and do low cost vacations. The other trip was for Thanksgiving weekend – met friends in Italy and spent 5 days touring, drinking, wine, etc.
Now that I’m on the west coast – the travel time alone is a killer – add at least 8 hours to the start airport to end airport travel time (because there’s always at least one layover somewhere: Chicago/Atlanta/east coast. I used to go to Europe at least once a year – now I go every 4-5 years.
That said – Hawaii and Japan are more convenient from the West coast.

Yes, but there are no low-cost fares to Hawaii or Asia. Even the the low-cost deals to Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean are not from LAX but JKF. Thanks to USAirways, PHL is a very convenient hub airport.

June 3, 2010 at 9:55 PM #559391sdrealtorParticipantFYI, PHL could easily be the worst airport in the country. It is absolutely miserable! I’ve waited hours for baggage there and no one seems to care. Weather delays are common year round. People are mean there. I’ve rented cars with guarantees on a specific car and gotten there only to be told they dont have any cars let alone the one I wanted.
Also US Airways controls about 80% of the gates so fares have traditionally been very non-competitive. The best thing to happen to PHL was SWA which has made travel more reasonable on routes they compete with US Air on.
I try to fly in and out of Newark when possible. Much better airport with a train shuttle to parking/rental cars. More non-stops, cheaper fares, better in bad weather and only an extra hour drive.
BTW, Alaska Air will be flying non-stop to Honolulu and Maui as of October 1st. I booked great flights for my kids October break for $315 each!!! That is non-stop to Maui with great flight times!
