Rich, perhaps try upgrading to the “real” reCaptcha: http://recaptcha.net/. I use it on various heavily-trafficked sites and haven’t had a problem with spammers.

The solution employed by the system I am using is to guess whether it’s potential spam, and to only captcha (is that a verb?) if it is. So some non-spam will get captchad (sorry), and some spam will get through — though hopefully that will decrease as the system learns.
