Participant
. . . Not a lot different than when I was in college, when my first semester cost $200 including books. And we ate tuna from a can and a lot of quesadillas.
I still eat tuna from a can and quesadillas :=]

Me too on the quesadillas. Canned tuna not so much. Not even tuna noodle surprise with potato chip crust.

The preferences are generational and also there are many more designer items available now, as well as knockoffs than there were in “yesteryear.”
I think that it has to do with easy credit.
When I was young, if you drove a Cadillac, you were The Man. Now, everybody can lease a luxury car.
If you throw enough money at a sector you will cause inflation. We threw at lot of money a higher education by allowing students to get into debt (and private lenders to benefit).
Good documentary:
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/collegeinc/econprof is right, an adjustment is good.
