ParticipantPeople got to know in theory you never own your house in China. The people owns it, you are on a hundred years lease at government’s mercy. Also, I think getting into China stock market is a little too late. I mean Buffet just cash out and maybe he knows something we don’t.

Interesting; Do you have any information on this?
That said, are there any statistics on unencumbered (no mortgage/HELOC etc.,) homes owned in US?

ParticipantMost houses in the US have property taxes, and even if they don’t the federal government can put a lean on your house to collect income tax. So in effect your house in the US is also owned by the people.

ParticipantAnyone who is interested in real estate and globalization should take a trip to China. The scale of development is mind bloggling.
China is to America what America was to Europe in the 19th century.
Go to China and see for yourself (after the Olympics because it’ll be very crowded next year). Spend 3 weeks to 1 month and fly all over the country.
China is a country not be ignored.

ParticipantSogon: I hope you were being satirical! How can you confuse taxes with ownership? The government never keeps your title. If you don’t pay your debts, they can seize your assets – just like anyone else. If you default on a debt to me, I can probably force you to sell your house to pay me; that never makes me the owner.

ParticipantSogon is compare apple to orange. Go search property law of People’s Republic of China. Wiki has a good article on it. It is based on land tenure. I won’t say it is bad, but government do own all the lands. So unless your house can float or fly, you don’t really own your house or at least not the land.

ParticipantYou don’t pay property tax in China. That’s one of the greatest things as a home owner there. As this country has a young government of only 58 years history, it has been experiencing a lot of revolutions since day one (bad or good). Policies can change. I read news that in their congress meeting(People’s representation assembly), some people have already proposed to make land private property for several times, but those proposals did not pass yet. It will pass one day.
