14 for a cat is old, at least nature-wise. Very few cats in the wild would ever reach this age. A lot of them start getting pretty weird after 12-13. It could be dementia.
The scratching at the door is totally normal though. A cat has to constantly patrol and re-mark its territory to prevent another cat from taking it over. Closing a door to them prevents them from making the rounds and they will go nuts until it is opened again.

October 28, 2010 at 4:11 PM #623901treehuggerParticipantBF and I moved in together 6 months ago he had 2 skittish, unaffectionate, stand offish, cats. I had 2 dogs (crazy/ hyper weimaraners). My dogs are weird one is afraid of the cats and the other wants to play.
They were 2 male neutered cats (2 and 3 years old) who were previously house cats in a 2nd story condo. Within a month of moving into our house one of the cats got out, freaked, hung out in the back yard for 2 days and when we came near ran into a culvert known to be traversed by coyotes. We have not seen him since….
The other cat is now affectionate and friendly. He hangs out with us and plays with one of the dogs.
I am in no way recommending that you throw one of the cats to the coyotes, but….
