I must be like a cat b/c I am put off by the unfamiliar smell of a place until it smells like me. (Not that I stink or anything…)
I almost moved out of a rental until one day I walked in the door and ‘ahh, it smells like home, this isn’t so bad’… so I called up the landlady and asked to renew after all.
OTOH I did move out of another rental just as fast as I could b/c nothing I could do would get rid of the chemical, alien smell of the new paint/carpet/etc that was there when I moved in.
Women readers who have keen senses of smell will probably know what I’m talking about.

Ox, either the cats pick up that you don’t like cats, or they are especially neurotic cats. Based on all the various cats I’ve encountered, I’d put these closer to the neurotic end of the scale (there are friendlier cats than that in the world, believe me.)
If your girlfriend had a previous boyfriend who beat up these cats, that would do it too. I once had a housemate whose cat was petrified of men, and in general was pretty messed up psychologically. Her ex had almost killed it as a kitten.
I wonder if rubbing cat treats between your hands and leaving them in their food dishes would calm them down about you? Way to their hearts and all that.

October 28, 2010 at 8:51 AM #623591ucodegenParticipant
’ve known these cats since she bought them about a year ago (helped pick them out) and had sorta accepted their lame, skiddish behavior, but now it is getting to me. They lurk in the hall until you walk toward them and then they friggin bolt for under the bed like I am a feline ax murderer (hmm, there’s a thought).
Use a laser pointer as a cat-toy tool. If they bolt under the bed, have the dot from the laser pointer move about the bottom edge of the bed. They may start associating you with the red dot that is chase-able.Don’t try to chase them down to pet them. Use the laser pointer dot to get them closer to you. Get them chasing the dot at a distance to you and once chasing, have the dot sometimes approach you.
It does sound like the cats don’t have much human contact even with your GF. The end result being that they are quasi-feral.

October 28, 2010 at 9:43 AM #623641EnorahParticipantCats are intensely sensitive and loving beings. They take their cues from you. So if you are holding anything in your energy field that lets them know you do not really want them around, they will not want to be around you.
Flu, I used to be allergic to cats, as did my husband. Then a cat showed up at our home in northern california and asked to live with us. We let her with the agreement that she would be an outside cat. That lasted about a week. I feel in love with her sweetness and our allergies disappeared. I once read that a cat allergy was manifestation of an inability to receive unconditional love.
We have 2 other cats now, our old girl died a couple of years ago. Every morning one of them jumps on the bed, lays on my chest, and licks my face to wake me up. The other one will wake up from her nap and then call to me or my husband to come over to her. She will then proceed to circle around us and smush her face into ours and purr up a storm.
Oxford, get down on all fours, on their level and let them come to you. Use a soft voice when you speak to them.
If you let them love you, you will come to understand that they can be great friends. That means, however, that you must be willing to be open to them. Right now they think you do not like them (which you don’t). Well, do you like to hang out with people who act like they do not like you?
The flower essence Rescue Remedy is also very useful for calming cats.
