Meadandale,
I think they had already paid something for the box and he was holding that money hostage. Something like extortion. You can’t have your money back and he won’t take the strawberries he claims are in excess of those paid for back. I would have definitely found a fair solution and forced it upon him.
It especially bothers me because this “pick your own” is supposed to be somewhat of a charming experience. It also sounds like the group of host and tourist guest(s), consists of ethnic minorities. I wonder if this guy is targeting them thinking they won’t fight back.
I know it would not have happened to me. I would want to be sure he didn’t say the box could be filled level or something like that and then it was heaped excessively. It doesn’t sound like that happened? Did you guys try to stack the strawberries 10 feet high?

July 23, 2009 at 9:26 AM #436141CBadParticipantI’ve been there a lot over the years and haven’t had this problem. But I have to agree that they aren’t the nicest people in the world working there and have run into rude people working the stand.
I can’t believe the groups couldn’t have worked out this problem though. Go to the stand, take out the excess strawberries (they sell strawberries at the stand without picking them yourself) and leave. But I’m sure if I were there with my husband, we would have just gotten into the car with whatever amount of strawberries we had and left or there would have been a strawberry food fight between us and the “fat man”. I mean come on, is the guy sitting there with a gun telling you you can’t leave?

July 23, 2009 at 9:37 AM #436403briansd1GuestI just love this story.
Let me make a parallel to real estate. π
It’s not OK to overpay $5 for a box of strawberries… That was a rip-off!
…. But some would claim that it’s OK to overpay on a house because you “enjoy” it, can customize it whatever color you want, and amortize the cost over many years.
Similarly, if you can comfortably afford the strawberries and can enjoy it a longer period of time, then you’re fine (just make sure you take smaller bites).
Actually, if you buy less food in the future to amortize away the extra cost of the strawberries, you’ll be thinner and healthier. π
