We moved here for the same reason (SoCal beach lifestyle and ended up in South Carlsbad (Encinitas school district). You’re right about PB and OB which are dumps full of trashy drunks looking for meth, a fight, or both. Not an area I’d take my dog much less my kids. Last time I went to Dog Beach I got sick for a week because of who knows what was in that water. Del Mar has a much nicer dog beach.
I rarely venture further south than Del Mar. La Jolla is way too crowded. I can get to Del Mar in 20 minutes via Coast Highway and I’ll pass 20 restaraunts that are good to excellent. Shopping is right around the corner, the beach is a few minutes away, and the schools are great. Not much to complain about. The only change I’d request is that the Pizza Port Brewery people would add a 3rd location (other two are Solana Beach and Carlsbad Village) smack dab in the middle of those two which by my account would be where the Yellow Coyote in the Forum currently resides.

April 19, 2008 at 6:38 AM #190203NewtoSanDiegoGuestI will have to try the Pizza Port!
Bubblesitter has it right with the Coaster train commute. I rode it for the first time a few months back. It is an awesome train, seems brand new, great views riding right on the top of beach at times. The sunsets over the Pacific have got to be cool.
Gas is approaching $4 and we are not even in the summer drivng season! Commodity oil prices are north of $115/bbl. Coaster looks like a great way to commute. I gotta look into the free shuttles at Sorrento Valley, I work right near there in North part of La Jolla. Someone was telling me that a lot of companies offer discounts and/or pre-tax purchases of Coaster tickets. Gotta check with benefits dept.
Any bike commuters out there that use the train? I saw alot of bikers on the train last time.
Well anyhow, after relo out here a few months back, I just extended a temporary month-to-month rent, waiting to see where the market goes. Living now in UTC, it is condo hell, just not my cup of tea.
