Work in IT (Sr. Java) with a decade+ of experience. Got laid off 2 wks ago in a brand new job I started, was there just for a month and the company had financial troubles from decreasing revenues..hmm.
Thinking of taking a year off, 6 months traveling middle east/africa/s.e. asia and 6 months in spanish language school as i’ve always wanted to work on my spanish to gain fluency.
Do have savings to tide me over when I get back.
Wow, nice! Go for it-it will be great experience.

Wow, nice! Go for it-it will be great experience.
thanks, probably will. I’ve been on the fence about this because of some people who told me I am nuts and it’s craziness and career suicide to take these types of breaks. It’s encouraging to note that others have done this as well…the way some people talk one would imagine this type of thing is unheard of.

Guest
I took 2 months off to take care of my new born baby. Quite a vacation, highly recommend it!
In European terms, that doesn’t count. That’s fairly routine in Europe.
