Not along the coast. Five Guys just opened in Encinitas. Kohls is about to open next door in an old Albertson’s location. Borders left and Urban Outfitters came to the Forum Shoppes. Pacific Coast Grill is expanding and moving to the Old Charlie’s by the Sea location on the 101. The just added a ton of new retail space at the Carlsbad Company Stores and we got a Roadrunner Sports store among other things. And perhaps the biggest (still unconfirmed) news is that Nordstron rack is coming to Encinitas town Center where Linen’s and things left whil;e Target next door isundergoing a substantial expansion/remodel. We are rocking along the coast!
Yeah a hamburger chain moving in is a real sign of economic health. I noticed 5 guys opening up everywhere, I’m not too impressed with their food or atmosphere. Seems like they are oversaturating an already saturated market (saturated fat market?). The one new burger chain I do like is Smashburger, that is a real step up from In&Out or 5-guys and not too expensive.

Sorry… the OP mentioned for lease signs. And subsequent posters mentioned unemployment. I didn’t realize we were only talking retail. On the retail front – I see a lot of empty storefronts in UC (near Henry’s) and in Clairemont (on the three retail corners at Balboa and Genesee.)
I don’t think we’re out of the woods.

May 23, 2011 at 5:12 PM #697975enron_by_the_seaParticipantMy observation is opposite.
For retail, last 2 years were very bad and things are slowly improving now. I am actually now noticing that many vacancies are going away with new stores moving in places which were lying vacant for one or two years.
There is still a long way to go before all the malls fill up though…
For offices though things might be different. I don’t see those “for lease” signs going away and for some reason they still keep on building office towers in the city.
