Keep your current box fan and get a white noise generator instead. If you’re interested, I can provide some links.
Hmm, I had to google white noise generator to see what it was. Basically just some soothing nature soundtrack? Do those really work?
svelte is right… a ‘noise machine’ may be what you need. I’ve been using one for years. Mine looks like this one:

Since I am a light sleeper, I’ve tried everything:
(1) Making room perfectly quiet…good luck with that!
(2) Earplugs…okay, but didn’t work that great as I would get distracted by my heartbeat
(3) Leaving TV on…every station has sudden sounds that wake me up
(4) Natural sound machine…worked okay, but the machine broke after 3 months. Then I discovered this:

I have the one on the lower left. It works like a charm! I’ve had it about 5 years now.
The noise it generates sounds like the ventilation system on a plane. It is consistent, even, fairly loud, and I sleep very well now.
A side benefit is that when I travel, I fall asleep before the plane is off the ground! lol Thank you Pavlov.July 20, 2010 at 7:32 AM #580364svelteParticipantOooo that Brazilian natural sound maker does look very enticing!
