You are right pri that was a bit over the top. What I meant was the only luck we count on is bad luck. We invest very very conservatively for my parents. Before last year they hadn’t owned an individual stock in over 30 years. What we bought last year was as low risk stocks as there are. Consumer staples with long and stable dividend histories. We didn’t buy for appreciation and going down in the short term was not a concern. The fact they went up by double digits was definitely not part of our plan. That was lucky but again we don’t use the idea of luck in our planning (ie appreciation) which was less than clear in my post

Just teasing – sounds like you know what you are doing. I believe that one can make their own luck, for the most part.
