zk,
I should have been more specific. I’m looking for examples in Washington. As you ought to be aware, Washington is a completely different animal than Springfield or any other state capital.
If you’ll recall, GWB used his relationship with the Democratic legislature in Austin as a selling point in his 2000 presidential bid.
By the way, I’m not especially impressed that a deputy director for AFSCME would laud a Democrat. Would you somehow expect otherwise?
January 18, 2007 at 5:25 PM #43752LookoutBelowParticipantObama is a "test balloon" sent up for the GOP and the DEMS…..he hasnt got a chance in hell to get elected…..He is their weathervane…trying to see which way the wind is blowing……
If you think he's not part of the "good ol boy' network….you better think again, he's just a smidgen darker is all, they will make that look like the tiger woods of politics….he's black when he needs to be and white or otherwise when he needs to be…… He is not enough of either color to be accepted in their groups……anybody watch Dave Chappelles show ?….remember the "Racial Drafts"….He would have a field day with Obama
January 18, 2007 at 7:05 PM #43766carlislematthewParticipantEven near-pacifists like Perry are ready to karate chop at a moment’s notice.
JG, that was hilarious! LOL!
January 18, 2007 at 7:14 PM #43768carlislematthewParticipantThe reason that a lot of people IMO think the Democrats are elitist is because that is what they see PC.
I couldn’t agree more. In the 2004 debates, Kerry was the obvious winner in terms of intellect. However, his smug annoying face just said to me, “I’m smarter than you and you know it”. I’m a democrat (just!) but Kerry is just too much for me. I wish he would go away and stop pretending like he matters still.
I’m not saying that I want someone less intelligent (like, you know you who) but I *am* saying that I want someone intelligent, but humble. Confident, but skeptical and willing to listen. I want a leader, but not a dictator.
It’s a hard role to fill, but I believe I have not seen ANYONE on either side that I could vote for, yet.
January 19, 2007 at 7:53 AM #43769sdnativesonParticipantI think it’s an honest statement and I agree, but not for all the same reasons that he (or others here) necessarily has in mind (I’m guessing). There are a lot of variables that come into play with the “education” of the American people on our current status in Iraq -some are within his control, some not.
IMO, I think he and his people have done a poor job in their content, context, manner and timing in communicating to the public more often than not in the last couple of years (more or less). Now, don’t miscontrue that statement as to meaning I am going left or right with it. I’m not, there are things I base it upon that will cause vehement disagreement from one side or the other. Also, this doesn’t mean I am against the war either, I’m not (against the war)
I assume the second paragraph is from his address the other night? I still haven’t read it so I’m not sure how to respond as to him talking down to us (I’m paraprasing), if it is, let me know and I’ll read it. Then give you my take.
off the cuff, it appears that a lot of Americans don’t understand and the lesson trying to be taught isn’t concise. You point out accurately that one can learn a language in two years (if motivated) So, using a school as a parable, the teacher has his resonsibilites, as does the administration, as do the students. I think all have failed to some degree
(Bush the teacher, the Administration would be those who
decide how, when, what and where materials are allowed to be used in the curriculum they approve of(I’m thinking in the context of the media mostly maybe, I need to add the School Board and disseminate it more properly) and the public – us are the students.I know that isn’t a very eloquent example but I am a little pressed for time at the moment.
I look forward to your critique.January 19, 2007 at 8:16 AM #43797AnonymousGuestOsama is going to be yesterday’s news much quicker than I ever guessed:
Muslim; educated for four years at an Indonesian madrassa; smoker; middle name of Hussein; Kenyan father followed by Indonesian stepfather.
Sourced from lucianne.com.
Goodbye Osama, hello Hillary/Al G./John E./Joe L.!
January 19, 2007 at 9:27 AM #43812AnonymousGuestI like Biden, always have. Don’t know anything about Obama, but I agree he doesn’t have a chance in hell. Clinton lost any credibility for her support of the Iraq clusterfuck.
January 19, 2007 at 10:18 AM #43817PerryChaseParticipantObama’s spending his childhood in Indonesia is a great asset. I grew up attending international schools in different countries and I consider the experience to be one of the highlights of my life. I learned so much by living in other countries. My dad was also mostly absent and made me more independent and I grew-up faster.
It’s really sad that most Americans are afraid to venture out of their cocoon.
jg, you should really take some time off on your own, away from your family and comfort, and travel the world. You won’t be attacked for being an American. Instead you’ll meet great people who have so little yet are willing to share so much.
January 19, 2007 at 1:09 PM #43848AnonymousGuestPerry, I’ve seen lots of the world: I sailed the seven seas for four years in a tin can and a sub, with lots of fun port visits in the Pacific and Canada. I lived in Europe for a year. Separately, I’ve had lots of business trips to Europe. I’ve seen all that I need to at this point in my life.
Single folks and liberals have this odd attitude that one can just say ‘adios’ to family to ‘go find oneself.’ Do that stuff with one’s wife, after the kids leave home. Or, do that stuff BEFORE one has a wife and kids. When one has a wife and kids, they are what’s important, not self.
One of our engineers is on a sabbatical, traveling via motorcycle down to South America and back up. It’s mostly carousing, with some sightseeing thrown in. C’mon, Perry, you get that stuff out of your system when you’re in the military as a young man.
Osama’s Indonesian ‘experience’ ain’t gonna fly to well with working class Democrats, me thinks, your personal endorsement notwithstanding.
January 19, 2007 at 2:41 PM #43852sdnativesonParticipantquickly, Hillary has “attacked” Obama for what you two (PC, jg) have been discussing, from what I’ve heard she isn’t saying much of anything different than he said in his book but this is heresay on my part. as I said, from the little I’ve heard it’s being made to sound like it’s his “dirty little secret” that he wants to hide.
lol. imagine the reaction if it was someone other than Hillary (especially a republican!) who pulled such a stunt.
It’ll be interesting to see who calls her out on it.January 19, 2007 at 2:56 PM #43854zkParticipantsdnativeson, that’s a very good point. You’re right, if a republican pulled this stunt, the democrats would be all up in arms. But hillary pulled it, and the democrats should be all up in arms anyway, because it’s just plain lameness. It’s nothing more than emotional manipulation.
But they won’t be, because she’s a democrat. That should be all the more reason for democrats to say to her, “hey, knock it off, you’re hurting our chances in ’08 on two fronts. One, you look like a fool for bringing it up, so that hurts your chances. And two, some people will fall for it, so you’re hurting Obama’s chances.”
Yes, it will be interesting to see who calls her out on it, if anyone.
January 19, 2007 at 4:38 PM #43861PerryChaseParticipantjg, traveling with the military or on business with an expense account is not the same as independent travel. I know a guy was a military officer in Korea. He shopped at Costco and would eat at Pizza Hut on base. He never learned to speak Korean.
I don’t see what the big is with with Obama attending a madrassa. That just a local muslim school — just like you’d attend a catholic school if you lived in Italy in the 1970s.
Obama’s step dad was Indonesian and probably couldn’t afford to send his step son to expensive international schools. So he sent him to a local school.
It’s expensive for expatriate children to attend American or international schools. The tuition for those schools is more expensive than several months’ average salary in developing countries such as indonesia.
Marrriage of American women (like Obama’s mom) to foreigners tend to fail because of money issues. The wife is used to live a rich American life and the husband is unable to provide it. That creates a lot of strain in the relationship.
I grew up in expatriate communities to I kwow what it’s like. This whole issue with Obama is overblow. There’s nothing to it and I don’t believe that this smear campaign will work. I thought that Hillary would have more class than this. I’m disappointed.
January 19, 2007 at 7:49 PM #43866gold_dredger_phdParticipantObama’s just another symptom of the Multi-culti suicide of the West. He’s being promoted by the most anti-American group of people you can find: journalists.
One bright spot in this whole sordid collapse of civilization is when American feminists are forced to wear the hajib and are removed from their tenured positions at American universities.
January 19, 2007 at 8:44 PM #43868AnonymousGuestUh, Perry, Osama attended a Wahhabi madrassa in Indonesia. Kind of like if I attended a Catholic school run by Torquemada.
Now that I think about it, Osama kind of looks like a clean-shaven Richard Reid. Smokes, too. Hey, check Osama’s shoes next time he tries to board a plane!
