For the last ten years, Armando Montelongo has been flipping houses in San Antonio, Texas, and building a real estate empire. Now, with the real estate market tanking, Armando has turned his attention to helping homeowners in trouble. He believes when it comes to money most people create their own bad luck. It’s Armando’s mission to set investor-wannabes straight and tackle one real estate nightmare at a time. In this episode, Armando travels to San Clemente, California, to help Tom and Deb Finnegan. Their renovation project has spiraled out of control: a 3,000-square-foot Spanish Renaissance dream house has become a house of horrors. A series of unfortunate events, including the death of their contractor, left the Finnigans penniless. Armando first must push Tom and Deb to end their cycle of self-destruction and follow his advice or face complete financial ruin.

I was relating to them at first – their first contractor abandoned the job. That happened to us… it is a very expensive and demoralizing thing to have happen. But then they were talking… they had no job (neither of them), we’re living in a “motel” that looked like a very nice small beachfront cottage. (Not cheap.) They had no money but were insisting on super high end finishes. They were in full denial that this wasn’t go to be their house when it was done.

At the end, they’re living in a trailer in a friends house… and still in denial. At some point, you get a job, any job.

Just got around to pulling this show off of my DVR. I also can relate but only to the extent of wanting something you really couldn’t afford. I had the money for high-end finishes. But now, I wish I had that money back. Yes, smooth stucco is a waste of money- the stuff cracks and you can’t spot-repair it!

There is a certain amount of show-business going on inside this episode. But, it does happen to the best of them.

They aren’t proud people- borrowing $200k from friends/family and living in a friend’s trailer in his back yard?

Wow, I’d just go get a job at Home Depot but keep in mind they had to complete the house on a tight schedule. No time to be dinking around at a job.
