Any one has security camera system in your home? DIY or Professional Installation

With a new baby coming and hearing stories about numerous break-ins in SD, I am thinking about installing a few cameras around my house to deter thieves.

Do you have a security camera system in your home? Did you install it yourself or have professionals do it? Please give me some recommendations regarding the system and cost.

I was looking for higher resolution cameras because I wanted to be able to get a identifiable license plate when people pulled into the driveway.

I’ve been very happy with the result. The cameras a motion activated, and when they sense motion, I have them set to take a snaphot and e-mail it to me. In addition, motion also has them start recording video. Recorded video is recorded to both a micro sd card that is on the camera, and also to either a home computer, or your dropbox account ( I like the drop box account because you’d still have recorded video if someone swiped your home computer). The camera’s also have night vision.

Logitech has apps so that you can watch live video from your iphone/ipad/mobile device, as well as you can login to a logitech site and watch live video via web browser on your computer.

Deter thieves? Fake cameras would do just as well. Real cameras might only catch them after the fact if they chose not to be deterred. Or were too cracked out to be afraid.

I worry that professional thieves would recognize fake cameras. I don’t think the cameras are 100% effective but if I can deter 80% of potential break-ins then I would be happy.

Get a dog — most burglars aren’t professional, and your average strung out meth fiend won’t care about cameras.

I am thinking of buying one for my front door. I had a package worth $250 stolen last week–FedEx said it was delivered, but it wasn’t there. Thank goodness for Amazon, I can’t believe it, but they refunded my money.

Note. Camera is NOT going to help you find/catch the thief. True story.. Someone sneaked into my office, walked right into my room, and took 2 laptops, 2 phones from my desk… We have the perp on video. Aside from waiting for SDPD for 5 hours just to show up.. They took down the name, took the pictures and…. Did absolutely nothing…. And that included ME doing all the leg work of even finding the phone numbers the perp called. I had all the phone numbers and rough location of where the perp’s friends were in 15mins, with all my access to all datasources and tracing where the cell phone was being used that day. Even knew the perp’s “buddy name” because I checked message that was left on the phone… Cops even commented that jokingly “you’re doing our job for us…”…. It was as slam dunk of a case as possible… Yup, you guessed it… Absolutely nothing happened…Didn’t even get 1 phonecall back…

I’ve often wondered what came of this. That is seriously f’ed up.

Did you call the chief of police? If not, give it a try. You certainly deserve to get better service than this.

FWIW, I’ve had the same problem up in LA with LAPD. Had the name and location of someone who was using my credit card (he worked at a hotel I had stayed at and ordered stuff to be delivered to the hotel!), but they did nothing.

Write it up, post it to some local blogs along with officers’ names. Send it to some media outlets as well — “troubleshooters” love this kind of story.

I also recommend a letter to the Mayor and cc your City Councilman and cc the Chief.

I watch Turko files and people try for months to get the city to perform necessary repairs and Turko usually gets satisfaction within days. He really knows what buttons to push. I would also consider calling him.

I have outside cameras and dogs. Don’t have a lot of faith in either of them. I am a little hesitant to put cameras inside the house, maybe it has something to do with the 5th amendment. If i travelled a lot I would, but there is somebody home more than 70% of the time.
