So you thought it was trashy? Wow, I did not get that impression the few times I have been up there. Maybe where I live is the slums in your opinion and the condo I rent isn’t that bad (albeit I am surrounded by the slums).
Again, it really depends on the area. Last time I was up in Temecula proper for a wedding I thought that particular area was gorgeous. Big sprawling ranches. But again, this was the ‘rich’ area.
I unfortunately don’t know remember which neighborhood that was.
Anyways, the banks are going to have to do something with all those empty houses. My theory is you will see whole neighborhoods of low-income families living 2-3 to a property and then taking shared transportation to minimum wage jobs in the city.

There aren’t anywhere near enough jobs in Temecula to fill all empty houses with low-income families 2-3 to a property. That’s the kind of prospect I see for low-end McMansion tracts here in San Diego: Sky Ranch, Eureka Springs, parts of Eastlake, etc. Temecula is more likely to become a retirement destination.

IMO and based on my experience, Temecula is a great place to raise a family. In general Temecula has very good schools, great Fire and Police Departments and other support services.
Temecula is a well run city, period. It’s not perfect, but pretty close.
I feel very privledged to live in Temecula.
Does Temecula have crime? Yes, unfortunately – much of it from people that do not live in Temecula. I’ll guarantee you this – while I do consider the Temecula police department fair – most citizens in Temecula (and the police department) will not put up with a whole lot of BS.
Long time Temecula resident.
