What’s up with the crown molding craze?
Southern California houses are supposed to be modernist type suburban houses, especially the older houses of the 1970s.
Remember the ranch style houses?
What’s wrong with crown molding or moulding in general? Moulding gives the place a finish look.March 1, 2010 at 12:52 PM #519560an

I think the house has to be much older than the 80s to make the wall not vertical enough to make it a serious PITA to install new doors and crown moldings. My house was built in 1982 and I installed all new doors & crown molding myself with ease. After the first one, I was averaging 30 min. per door (w/out doing molding on the door.
Did you hang doors onto existing doorjambs, or did you install full packages?
Hanging the door onto the old crooked doorjamb is not too bad. But it won’t fit airtight, there may be small gaps in some places around the door.
The real fun begins if you try to hang a complete door package onto preexisting studs and it turns out that studs are 0.5° off vertical in different directions.

They are pre-hung door, so, new doorjambs too. You can fix minor stud vertical issue by adjusting the hinge. I have 1 that was off, as you say and I put some paper between the jamb and the hinge and it works perfectly now.March 1, 2010 at 2:58 PM #519590an
