Taz, you are rare to me. I am an engineer for 15 years now and since I consult I get around to many many companies. During this time I have only met one “born and bred” American woman in my field. All the other women are Asian (mostly Indian or Chinese). There’s nothing wrong with Asians of course (as you know by mainstream entertainment these days). The only American women I meet, sadly, are the ones who make my latte in the morning, the secretaries, and the ones who serve me food. I’m starved to meet an American woman who is on par with me in terms of financial independence, education, and outlook. Many of the American women I do manage to meet have spent their lives pursuing things I call “fun”, are now stuck in crummy jobs because of it, have failed in relationships because they chose the wrong guys, now classify men as all being “dawgs”, often have children, and when they feel the clock ticking they try to latch onto a guy who did all the work to make his life stable. On top of that they want to be treated special (but call it “equal”). Wow am I jaded?

Marion, I agree with Taz, you cannot simultaneously play the independence and “old-fashioned” cards, they are logically inconsistent. While it is fair to expect a man to show his interest in you, your idea that this can only be accomplished by a display of financial means is shallow and superficial. The richest man in the world can still treat you lack crap, you’re using an inaccurate gauge of character.

December 11, 2007 at 12:29 PM #114166Allan from FallbrookParticipantsavedbypigs: I have no doubt you exist (and I am happy that you do!), but it seems to be an unfortunate aspect of modern American society that any woman who is intelligent, opinionated and independent is labeled. I won’t use the various terms, as I’m sure you know them already.
Sadly, ignorance, superficiality and crassness are celebrated to the detriment of intelligence and class. Paris Hilton is the most egregious example of this. This woman is possessed of absolutely nothing redeeming as regards talent, looks or ability, yet she is held up as an icon.
While this post is somewhat off track in that we are supposed to be dealing with issues of pre-nups and what constitutes a “nice” date, I think the present societal attitudes and mores definitely factor into the equation.
