I vote for UC where UCgal lives. She might post something later.
UC is as short commute away from UCSD, no HOA and mello roos — a more convenient, centrally located community with larger lots (room for expansion). There’s more diversity and it’s close to the UTC Mall. (I don’t live there, I live Downtown so I’m uninterested 3rd party).
Spend $50k to $100k to fix up the house before moving in and you’ve got a nice house “practically in La Jolla”. The schools are full of children of academics and professionals with high test scores and other children with lower test scores so the blend of scores might not be so reflective.
Not sure what it would take to go Torrey Pines elementary in La Jolla, but I know someone whose daughter goes there and it sounds like a good school with kids from Europe and all over the world (I’m sick of the parents telling me about the daughter and the school all the time).
