Sorry Brian i dont live in CV either. I just know from experience that running home for lunch with young kids is pretty much a myth unless it is across the street. It just isnt a realistic assumption to base a home choice on. With that said a shorter commute at the end of the day is valid. I dont care where people buy, i just want to help them make the best decisions for themselves rather than cramming my perspective (vis a vis BG) down peoples throats. I encourage people to focus less on commute time (as long as it is reasonable which in my mind is under 45 minutes to an hour) and more on what they will enjoy when they are at home. Thats my opinion and its not right or wrong its just the way I view the world with the benefit of having experienced 2 hr, 1 hr, 45 min, 30 min and 10 min one way commutes in my life as well as working from home.

December 22, 2010 at 11:16 AM #643741sdrealtorParticipant
Brian, I live in Chula Vista, which, incidentally, has MUCH higher scores for the “Hispanic” population than these other “coveted” schools can seem to muster. What does that tell you about the teachers in these “top schools,” overall?? WHO exactly are they “catering to” all day??
What it tells you is that well educated hispanic families tend to buy newer homes and congregate in Chula Vista while the hispanic kids in carmel Valley tend to come from long time hispanic families that tend to be lower income. Its not the job the schools are doing rather it is the families the kdis are coming from. Great schools are more about immersing your kids in a challenging/competitive environment and instilling that in them at an early age than having great teachers who can be anywhere.

December 22, 2010 at 11:41 AM #643756bearishgurlParticipant
There are a lot of people speculating on commute options by looking at Google maps. Rather than have these ego-driven, “I am smarter than you” exchanges, wouldn’t it make sense for people to actually *ask* if any Piggington reader does those commutes on a regular basis?
I’ve seen it take over 40 minutes to go from Campus Point Drive to the 52 on ramp on Genesee, and that is not abnormal – you can depend on it a few times a week. On many days, it would actually be faster to take 5 South (which is itself a bit congested normally) to 52 East to Regents or Genesee North, effectively making a “loop” around the UTC area.
Likewise, any commute that takes you to 56 Eastbound in the afternoon, or uses Westbound in the morning, is going to be horrible. Every single day.
Worst case scenario analysis is pointless – almost every option for the original poster is going to involve some route that can get awful.
I completely agree about looking at maps online, Rhett. That’s why I asked Eugene specifically about his experience with State Route 56. Even AN couldn’t necessarily determine the blockages of the service road from Google maps.
My understanding was that you worked in the vicinity of UCSD. Thanks for your insight as well, as to SR-56. This is definitely in the OP’s “need-to-know” category.
