At one time I toyed w/New Mexcio. I visited Taos. Knew some people that were living off the grid. Can get by very cheaply. Live a very simple life and not having live around work. Though the winters are cold, they get more sunlight than coastal SD. Sometimes I still think about it. Haven’t been there in about 10 years, so probably has changed quite a bit. Very unspoiled. Great outdoors.
Yes, jp, NM is part of “God’s Country.” I drove thru there again this last July and there was heavy fog and SNOW falling in the mtns about 45 miles east of ABQ!

1900sqft shack in Mountain View that is termite infested, needs repiping, and 50+ years old will set you back $1+million.
flu, I don’t want to hijack this thread, but I’ve seen some AWESOME deals transpire with Pacifica SFR’s, just above all the natural open space up there.
San Mateo County ROCKS!

BG this is pure bullshit. Where in SD can you buy for circa 225k in a safe neighborhood? Where can you buy in SD that is suitable for raising a family other than some far flung suburb? The crime rates in even chula vista (even the nice parts) seem pretty ridiculous for people who have immigrated from else where, not to mention the schools and caliber of neighbors. Seriously where can you buy a house big enough for raising a few kids in a safe neighborhood close to the city? El Cajon?
jstoesz, IIRC, this attitude is the main reason why you have recently chosen to relocate to rural El Dorado County.
This post just displays the depth and breadth of your misperceptions and ignorance about areas of SD County you may have never set foot into yourself. I can tick off from the top of my head more than a dozen SD metro zip codes that have decent-sized SFR’s with decent-sized lots currently listed for $170K to $300K. And yes, El Cajon is its OWN self-contained city with its own “refurbished” downtown area which is quite large. For a potential first-time buyer Pigg who has stated they don’t even have any children, you come off here as having ultra champagne tastes on a beer budget.
I myself have lived south of SR-94 most of my adult life and haven’t been a victim of crime since 1984, when stereo speakers were left on our front porch by mistake and disappeared!
