ParticipantMy LL proposed a 9% increase the week after the fires. I looked around and found something much better and moved. I notice the old one is now sitting empty. Sweet vindication!

Guestlisten Honcho,
Your landlord is raising rents because he can. He’s betting that you think that moving is too painful for you and you will swallow it. When I was a landlord I occasionally did the same thing, randomly did a big 10% increase to test their aversion. I would make up some excuses, taxes fee, cost of business etc etc. Most of the time the sucker would eat it without too much complaint. Only when they seriously and credibly threatened to move did I back down a bit. I generally wouldn’t do a big raise too often again for that person. I had a couple tenents I raised a number of times without serious complaint, those dudes and dudettes paid for some vacations in Hawaii, ha.
