When I visited Australia, I found most of the people lived in the suburbs outside the main city very much like SoCal, the main difference is they used trains to commute to the city to work for the most part (sydney, melbourne, Brisbane and Cairns anyway).
They still had cars for the most part, but they were more for the weekend and shopping.
