This thread is awesome. Only having lived in SD for 1.5 years, we have been missing our Philly Chinatown restaurants. I have had some decent Thai here (Spice and Rice in La Jolla) and Sushi (Sushi Ota). Shanghai City was pretty good but not stellar for me. We may also venture out for dim sum (I have unfortunately been cursed with a shellfish allergy) once I get a new epi-pen.
Ranch 99 doesn't seem any dirtier than the Chinese groceries I used to frequent in Philly or NYC. My husband is a little scared of the meat department, though.

The fish department is worse, especially with all the surgeon general warnings. The shopping carts are beyond disgusting. I don't think they ever washed them, and I've seen plenty of janitors use them to hall away garbage early in the morning only to return them to the cart lines in the stores without doing anything else.
