The time for global trade charity is over. America is in a unique position, we could tell Japan that we are stopping all imports of cars until we get out of this mess and there is nothing they could do about it because they need us more than we need them. If they had any sense of fair play they would look back on the past 30 years and say “It’s your turn now, you need it and its only fair because we were really, really unfair to you for 30 years and it made us rich”.
We could tell the rest of the world to take leap because all we really need is oil and the oil countries don’t make anything anyway, so we could tell the rest of the world to handle its own shit while we get our house in order.
Imagine if Obama announced that tomorrow? All the BS he has done so far has given very few any hope that they will get a job out of this trillion dollars of stimulus. Telling America we are shutting the trade charity tap until our manufacturing jobs are flush like they were 25-40 years ago and America is healthy and debt free would send the country into nationwide celebration.
Telling the country that we are going to start making things again would give us something tangible to hope for and work towards with the obvious benefits of lasting jobs that pay well. Sure it would not be easy or problem free but it sure would fix our biggest troubles.
