The freeway needs to be widened and the project is currently underway heading from South to North. It always mad me laugh watching them throw so much money at the 5/805 merge when the real problem was the loss of about 4 Northbound lanes at Via de la Valle. They are finally working on the portion between Via de la Valle and Lomas Santa Fe. Evenutally they will reach Oceanside.
With that said there will always be a couple trouble spots. I-5 snakes through Encinitas rather than running in a straight line which causes brake pumping and back ups. Also just North of Cannon Road the 5 veers West creating blinding sun in the eyes of Northbound PM rush hour communters. I’m sure there are more but those are 2 of my pet peeves.
