OMH, my thoughts exactly. If you don’t like it, stop complaining and find a better solution. This thread is teetering on entitlements.
Maybe I’m missing something, but I don’t see it so much as entitlement, but rather people wanting to get decent raises. If people don’t get those cost of living increases when the economy is tanking and gas is shooting threw the roof, it stands to reason that people are going to get worried, resentful and angry. In Lake Elsinore, teachers were forced to accept rate freezes or get laid off. As you can imagine, there were some very angry teachers at the union meeting.
I agree about the consultant thing which is something I plan on doing in the future in my field. You have a year to year contract, usually, and you tell them what you charge for your services and negotiate from there. If you want a raise every year, or two, or whatever, you reflect that in your starting rate of pay.
And nostradamus is right, the downside of being a consultant is since you’re not an employee of the company, you get no company benefits.
