Since California’s economy is premised on those liberals that John so cavalierly dismisses, I’d say, no I’m not surprised CA is a blue state. Take a look at the founders/CEOs of most of the high tech in the Bay Area and you’re looking at fairly hardcore liberals.
The problem is the Democratic Party consists of the “educated elite” white collar workers and a very blue collar element that really don’t understand each other. It’s pretty clear that Hillary attracts the latter and Obama has captured the former (and the younger voters).
As for Obama, he only won 25% of the Asian Democratic vote in the last CA primary. Most of the Asian MDs and lawyers that I know voted for him so this “younger” generation must constitute that 25%.
I can only guess that a very large number of 1st generation Asian immigrants will not vote for him on the basis that he’s black. My mom outright told me that it’s better not to vote than to vote for Obama. Well, she’s a born again Christian and I do human embryonic stem cell work, so you can see that we don’t agree on many issues. But Asians are as racist as they come, and a large portion of them will not vote for Obama due to his race.
