Sdgrrl: Before consigning Zeit to the rubbish heap of history, I would suggest you do a little research on how the US Government has been systemically chewing into our civil liberties over the last 30+ years, starting with FISA in 1978.
It has been a bi-partisan effort, including Clinton (NSA Carnivore/Echelon programs, rendition, expansion of domestic surveillance programs) and, obviously, Bush (Patriot Acts I and II, warrantless wiretapping, extraordinary rendition). Just for shits and giggles, research how many cameras there are in New York City monitoring your movements.
This isn’t paranoia or the “Loony Left” or a “Vast Right Wing Conspiracy”. Most of this has been done in the guise of protecting Americans, but the reality is an ever more intrusive government with ever expanding powers and the ability to oversee nearly all aspects of our lives, including access to health and financial records.
I don’t think the jump to Nazism is quite as big as you imagine, unfortunately. As Sinclair Lewis said in his 1935 novel “It Can’t Happen Here”: “When fascism comes to America, it will be wrapped in the flag and carrying a cross”.
Obama has invoked Jesus far more than Bush. True story, look it up.
