Still not sure if UC is an option given traffic on Genesee and Governor – but hope to test that out soon. Also, wife seems to be leaning heavily towards the area around Sage and Ocean Air anyway. But we’ll see!
A flexible commute can pretty much negate the Genesee/Governor issue, as can some route creativity (coming in from the south via 52, for example).
Getting onto the 52 from the 5 south is backed up every day for the evening rush (wife drives by that now and has seen it daily for a few months). But it would be an alternate route.
Last night test drove from work parking lot to Standley Middle school (right by one of the listings in UC that bearishgurl suggested) using local streets (La Jolla Village to Nobel to Genesee) up through the Genesee/Governor intersection. Took 11 minutes going through 14 lights (many of which I got lucky on and hit green). Left at 4:35pm – about when she’d typically be leaving, however UCSD is not in session and the VA hospital traffic wasn’t present (let people leave early for the holiday I guess? other times we’ve seen quite a steady stream heading out of their parking lot at that time). There was no traffic out of the high school either (although presumably by 4:45-5pm on normal days this wouldn’t have much effect?). Anyway, this is a best-case scenario for sure. The reverse trip took closer to 15 minutes (hit more lights, and have to turn left from Governor to Genesee and left from Genesee to Nobel whereas those are right-hand turns come home).
