Regarding motorcycles: I used mine like a car, so I often started it at odd hours. I just kept the stock/quiet pipe on it. If you’re one of the “loud pipes save lives” Hardley-Ableson crowd, you’re inconsiderate by definition.
If you keep the stock muffler on a relatively modern bike, it shouldn’t wake half the block even at 3 am.
