I believe there is another thread that dealt with this issue pretty extensively. However, her (their) bad “life habits” may not ever cost anyone a dime – whereas his impulsive choice to take off, uninsured, on a motorcycle on unfamiliar roads at night for a “little trip” cost hundreds of thousands. Unless we can penalize people for all of their bad choices that lead to health problems, I don’t think focusing on the standard litany of smoking, drinking and eating is fair. In fact, insurance was designed to spread the burden across society, but that doesn’t seem to be the way we’re going.
