I understand all this, brian, and, having traveled throughout the western and southern portion of the US, I actually take for granted the wide variety of fresh produce at reasonable prices available to residents of Cali and know why they are “reasonable.”
The transportation costs in ventilated and/or refrigerated trailers from Cali to America’s heartland likely add substantially to the cost of most of the fresh produce in their supermarkets.
Peaches, onions and sugar beets are grown commercially in CO.
Berries of all types are grown commercially in NE.
I’ve probably missed something here (beef/dairy/swine/poultry-not produce?)
So this produce wouldn’t have to travel as far to OK/AR, for instance, but is only available seasonally (except for processed sugar).
Cali’s produce is available year-round but has to be transported to the western US (most of it as far as the Mississippi river).
