At worst, it’s probably costing you $5,000.00 more per year to live in San Diego than it would cost to live in a less desirable place. Take a deep breath and relax. Don’t leave. Careful what you wish for.
Please look at this home in suburban Detroit 12 1/2 mile. Good school district, nice home, lot. The price for 4 beds, 2.5 baths, 1,800 sq ft (with half basement) is listed at 90K, probably a short sale, but comparables have sold for just a little higher. If they haven’t let the Eminem crowd move over from 8 mile, not a bad place if you have a job, telecommuting etc. Airport is 30 miles away, but heard its a ghost town. Most people in SoCal pay that much for a down payment or for two cars. With 20% down, payment is $400+Taxes+expenses($400), and I would assume lower costs for childcare. etc. I think it may add up to more than $5000 per year, but I’m sure someone will double check. This advice is only for those who are priced out of a 911.
BTW, I lived in this house in the 80’s (probably paid same as current price), very decent place for a family. I was lazy and mowed the lawn every two week on this oversized lot that extended 75% back to neighbors lot. It took 4 hours and I would empty bag 25-30 times! “mmm sweet summertime summertime”
